Shafik’s Earthquake Tools

Welcome to my earthquake data tools. On this page are my earthquake tracking tool and below that, the earthquake prediction tool.

Earthquake Tracking Tool

You can use it to visualize the location of earth quakes in an adjustable time period, as across the entire world.

Instructions:

  • Pick a magnitude range

  • Click the “Load and Classify Earthquakes” button

  • Wait a few moments and earthquakes with in the time period, and magnitude range will be visible.

  • You can pan and zoom around the map to move to a new world area to see different quakes

  • At the highest level you’ll see a circular with a number inside, indicating the number of earthquakes to expand out.

  • Clicking on a number will give you a poly-gonal boundary which forms a “hull” of earthquakes in a region, so you can visualize their centroid, and their expanse

  • Clicking on an individual solid circle (color key in lower left corner), will give you more info about the specific quake

  • The data is sourced from USGS and is updated on a daily basis

Earthquake Prediction Tool

This tool uses Machine Learning to attempt find future earthquakes in a region based on historical data. NOTE: This is a work in progress, and the predictions are not yet accurate. They should hopefully be improved as the ML is improved, but this is mostly for rough demonstration purposes. No time period in the future is given for prediction yet.

Instructions:

  • Click on the polygon tool to create a region in a specific area of the world

  • Make a polygonal boundary by click on points on the map. Make sure the end of the polygon closes by ending up at a vertex you started

  • Click on the predictions to get more info about them.
